I was going through some of the sessions I did in 2011 and trying to find my favorites of the year and this one definately is up there!

All 3 of these kids have been Babys First Year clients - babies who come to see me every 4 months to capture their first year.  I am really fortunate because their parents still come every years to see me for their family portrait sessions!

This shot was taken at the end of the session – can you tell!

Thought I would share this for anyone who has ever gone through all the work it takes to get family portraits done!

I once had a dad tell me he wished that one year I would go to their home and do portraits of the “gong show”  BEFORE they left the house to come for portraits.  He insisted THAT was the family portrait he would send out with their Christmas cards!  :)

With fall quickly upon us I thought I would post a few of my favorite portraits from some of the outdoor family portrait sessions I have done this summer.

Fall is a very popular time of year to do family portraits, especially if the photographer is doing color photography.  My speciality is black and white so when I do an outdoor portrait session I still do all the portraits in black and white.

There is something about black and white photography being timeless and personally, I find it has a more artistic look to me.   Even from my film days, whenever I went out into the country to just drive around and shoot photos, I always did my shooting in b&W film.

The beautiful little ladies came to see me last month.  I have been doing their family portraits for a few years now so the kids were really comfortable with me.  We had a great time and I got so many great shots of them!  This one is probably my favorite from the session.  Enjoy!

I have a photo tip for the first day of school, especially for anyone who has a little one starting kindergarten.

    Start a family tradition.

Find a spot outside in your yard and take a photo of them before they leave for school.  Every year I photograph both of my kids on the front steps on the first day of school.  Brand new clothes, new backpack, etc.  I like to do a few of my son, then my daughter and then a bunch of the 2 of them together.

For those of you whose kids are starting kindgerten or grade 1, dont be shy about taking your camera into the classroom with you.  Don;t worry, you won’t be the only parent with a camera and the teachers are more than used to it!  I have wonderful portraits of both of my kids sitting at their desks on the first day and I am so happy to have them!

    So, tips for tonight:

    - charge your cameras batteries or if it uses AA batteries, go buy some new ones

    - make sure you have lots of room on your sd card – you want to be able to take lots of photos because who knows what opportunities for photos lays ahead.  I had one parent tell me the teacher actually posed with each of her new students on their first day of school!

    - if your child is going to school with a friend, remember to get photos of the 2 of them together.  I have shots of my son on his first day with his best friend and 7 years later they are starting junior high together tomorrow!

    - try and get someone to take a photo of YOU with your child….Moms…we are notorious for not getting photos of US with our kids.  Tomorrow would be a good day to do it

Have a great day tomorrow everyone!

Both kids on their first days of kindergarten!
