I have a photo tip for the first day of school, especially for anyone who has a little one starting kindergarten.

    Start a family tradition.

Find a spot outside in your yard and take a photo of them before they leave for school.  Every year I photograph both of my kids on the front steps on the first day of school.  Brand new clothes, new backpack, etc.  I like to do a few of my son, then my daughter and then a bunch of the 2 of them together.

For those of you whose kids are starting kindgerten or grade 1, dont be shy about taking your camera into the classroom with you.  Don;t worry, you won’t be the only parent with a camera and the teachers are more than used to it!  I have wonderful portraits of both of my kids sitting at their desks on the first day and I am so happy to have them!

    So, tips for tonight:

    - charge your cameras batteries or if it uses AA batteries, go buy some new ones

    - make sure you have lots of room on your sd card – you want to be able to take lots of photos because who knows what opportunities for photos lays ahead.  I had one parent tell me the teacher actually posed with each of her new students on their first day of school!

    - if your child is going to school with a friend, remember to get photos of the 2 of them together.  I have shots of my son on his first day with his best friend and 7 years later they are starting junior high together tomorrow!

    - try and get someone to take a photo of YOU with your child….Moms…we are notorious for not getting photos of US with our kids.  Tomorrow would be a good day to do it

Have a great day tomorrow everyone!

This little man came to see me last month and he was easily the happiest little guy I have ever photographed!  I had lots of fun capturing his gorgeous smile and even know I can almost hear him giggle like he did his entire session.

We got some many wonderful baby portraits of him, rather than share just one, I decided to do a storyboard of some of my favorites.  Babies who are between 6 and 12 months old are lots of fun to photograph and I think this collection of baby photos shows what a happy little guy he was at his photo session.

I did some of the portraits I would normally do at my PRECIOUS PARTS photo session .  This session is done when baby is approx. 4 months old and is designed to capture that  ”Chubby baby” stage.  Then we did some of the photos I like to do at my CRAWLERS photo session  when baby is approx. 9 months old and show what stage baby is at.  Enjoy!

School is officially over for another year and I find myself wondering where that year went!

My daughter finished grade 3 and my son is off to junior high next year and it makes me a little sad to think his days in elementary, where school is still “fun” are over.

We are very fortunate to have had both our kids go through grade 3 with the same teacher.  Mrs G is an amazing teacher and with both kids school years, she helped them create some amazing art.  Those 7 years went by so fast, I am feeling very blessed that I took the time and spent the money to have my favorites professionally framed.  I have several pieces from both of my children’s grade 3 years, proudly displayed in our home.

Here is a set of 4 prints that my son did in his grade 3 year.  If you have something like this tucked away in a drawer or keepsake box, maybe think about pulling it out and getting it framed.  Every time I look at these pieces I get a smile on my face!

There are so many wonderful spots to do family portraits in Edmonton.  My favorite location is Emily Murphy Park.  I have been doing family portraits there for years now and I still love it as a location for outdoor photos.

June to September is high season for family photos so I thought I would provide a few tips on how to prepare for your family portrait session:

     Arrive early:

    • I usually suggest clients arrive 15 minutes early for a few reasons.  Summer is a busy time of year so it can be hard to find parking at local parks.
    •  Also, it is very hard for the children to be taken out of the car, see this beautiful wide open space and be ready to have their portraits done.
    • If you arrive early, it will give them to have some time to get adjusted to the new surroundings and maybe have a bit of a snack/drink before the session starts.

     What to wear:

    •  Darker colors tend to look best.  Also, the majority of outdoor portraits will involve you and your family sitting on steps, on the ground, on the grass, in trees, etc so you will get slightly dirty.
    •  Jeans and t shirts is always a nice look.  Dark Colors (red, blue, brown, dark green, etc) work best.  – Everyone should be in the same tone if possible.
    •  Clothing plays a huge part of whether a portrait looks nice or not.  It may be hot outside but you don’t want to wear summer wear.  Shorts, tank tops, etc are too casual for family portraits.  Most photographers have a certain style/look that they are trying to capture.  Clients who dress too casual may be asked to reschedule their photo session.
    • Dresses for little girls (under the age of 3 years old) doesn’t usually work.  They will be sitting on the grass, on steps, in trees, etc. and my experience is that they do not like their bare skin touching the rough surfaces.  If you have your heart set on a little dress, bring back up clothing just in case.

Another thing to remember, do not bring food with you during the actual session.  If you think your child is going to get hungry feed them prior to the session.  You don’t want to be spending your photo session time, watching your child have a snack

And finally, your photographer may have more than 1 photo session that day.  Usually, they will allot a specific amount of time for each session, so its important that you are ready to do your portraits at the time that was scheduled.
