In the almost 9 years since I have specialized in maternity photography and newborn portraits, I have had so many ladies tell me how they wish they had done maternity portraits!
To some people, the thought of getting maternity portraits done is really intimidating. Although they love the idea of having portraits done, they don’t get them done because they are worried about what they look like, the amount of weight they have gained, etc.
I thought I would share some tips about maternity sessions and show some of my favorite poses so clients can get an idea as to what is involved in a maternity portrait session!
When should I do my maternity session?
Ideally, the best time to do your maternity photos is about a month before your due date. The belly is nice and full and you still feel like you have some energy! Plus, you are still fitting in all your cute maternity clothes!
What should I wear to my maternity session?
Maternity photography can be clothed, partially nude, or fully nude. When choosing clothing for your session, try to wear clothes that have solid colors and avoid wearing anything that has huge patterns or prints. Bring a variety of clothing with you so that you have a few options. Same rules apply to your spouse. Try to also choose a fitted top-something that really shows the belly. If your clothes are too big, your belly will not be highlighted.
What should I bring to my maternity photo session?
You may want to bring a few of your baby’s things like an adorable pair of booties or a teddy you bought for the baby’s room. I also like it when clients bring something that represents them personally or the pregnancy. Have you had any cravings? Do you collect something or have a sport you love. Bring something along that we can put on the belly!
A few more tips… Avoid rubbing lotions on your belly before the maternity session. You don’t want a shiny surface of your belly. It can be a good idea to moisturize your elbows and feet.
About two hours before your photo shoot, remove any clothing or accessories with elastic. Items like bras, pants with elastic waistbands, even socks, leave marks on your skin that will show up in your maternity portraits.
How long will the maternity session take?
You will want to allow about 2 hours for your photo session. Try not to schedule anything for immediately afterwards. That way you won’t feel rushed.
